New York mother charged in deaths of 3 children
WHO: Leatrice Brewer, Jewell Ward, 6, Michael Demesyeux, 5, and Innocent Demesyeux
WHERE: NEW YORK
WHEN: Mon February 25, 2008
WHAT: A mother has been charged with murder in the death of her three children on Long Island
WHY: Investigators charged Leatrice Brewer on Sunday with one count of first-degree murder and and three counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Jewell Ward, 6, Michael Demesyeux, 5, and Innocent Demesyeux, 18 months, the Nassau County Police Department said in a news release. The one charge of first-degree murder alleges that Brewer intentionally caused the deaths of more than one person, police said. After a caller told police about the incident shortly before 9 a.m., a woman directed officers to the apartment, where they found the three bodies, police said.
HOW: Authorities told the AP that Brewer wasn't home but was found later. Police did not say where they arrested her.
Brewer, who cared for the children alone, had been overwhelmed, neighbors told AP. "She neglected them," Cornisha Robinson told AP. "She used to leave them in the house all the time by themselves." Robert McCord, Brewer's brother, came to her defense. "My sister's not crazy," he told AP. "She's not ballistic. This is a shock to all of us

Dad choked teen, stuffed her in burning boiler
WHO: Miguel Matias, 14-year-old daughter Ana
WHERE: NEW YORK
WHEN: Fri February 22, 2008
WHAT: Police said Matias, 34, was being held at Bellevue Hospital Center and awaiting arraignment on charges of murder and manslaughter. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.
WHY: But the unassuming building supervisor also had a dark side, including a history of violence and mental problems. Police said his torment peaked last week when he grew so enraged that his 14-year-old daughter, Ana, was sending text messages to a boy that he choked her and stuffed her body into a burning furnace boiler. The killing shocked friends and family especially a cousin who received a phone call from Matias in which he calmly described what he had done.
HOW: Family members said it was only after one of his sons said goodbye to his sister that Matias changed his mind and decided not to torch the car. It was not clear why he continued to have visitation rights. Family members said that before Ana's death, Matias wanted to seek psychiatric help. They said he had applied for Medicaid insurance to cover the expense of counseling, but was denied. Matias also tried to hang himself while in police custody last weekend.

Girl who took bullet for mom slowly heals
WHO: Seliethia Parker, Alexis Goggins
WHERE: DETROIT, Michigan
WHEN: Wed February 20, 2008
WHAT: Alexis Goggins climbed aboard a special bicycle and maneuvered through hospital hallways, beginning the months of physical therapy she needs to recover from six gunshot wounds.
WHY: To many people, the soft-spoken 7-year-old is a hero after she threw herself across her mother just as a gunman was about to shoot the woman in an SUV. The young girl bears several scars from the December 2 shooting, including a long, thin surgical line stretching from one side of her hairline to the other. Her right eye, which was blinded in the attack, has also been removed.
HOW: The mother and daughter were getting a ride from a friend when Parker's former boyfriend emerged from the shadows outside Parker's house and jumped into the vehicle. He then forced the friend to drive at gunpoint for several minutes. Under the pretense of needing fuel, Parker's friend stopped at a Detroit gas station to call 911. Inside the SUV, Parker pleaded with the gunman not to shoot. As he was about to open fire, Alexis cried, "Don't hurt my mother!" and jumped into her mother's arms from the back seat. Despite her daughter's efforts, Parker was shot twice. Alexis is learning-disabled and lags behind other youngsters her age. As a result, police say, it may never be known whether Alexis meant to shield her mother from the bullets. But Parker has said that if her daughter had not put herself in between she might have been killed.

Choosing radical cancer surgery
WHO: When Cheryl Lawrence and other woman.
WHEN: Tues. Feb. 5, 2008,3:55 a.m.
WHERE: University of Washington, University of Minnesota.
WHY: Cheryl Lawrence got a diagnosis of breast cancer, her surgeon told her she could save her breast. But Lawrence decided to have it removed anyway. And then she decided to have the healthy one removed, too. She had said this "I didn't want to ever have to deal with this again," said Lawrence, 40, of Olympia, Wash. "I just didn't want to have to worry about it. For me, it was a matter of peace of mind."
HOW: Lawrence is not alone: The proportion of breast cancer patients who are opting for double mastectomies when far less radical surgery would suffice has increased sharply, a trend that disturbs some experts. They say too many women may be taking the drastic step in the panic that often follows a cancer diagnosis, or with the mistaken belief that more aggressive surgery will improve their survival odds.
